GOOD NEWS:Cops, civilians escape Marawi battle zone after 21 days!WATCH!

MANILA - (2ND UPDATE) State troops on Tuesday rescued 5 police officers and 5 civilians who were trapped when extremists allied with the Islamic State launched their siege of Marawi over 3 weeks ago.

The cops had been communicating with authorities since the fighting started last May 23, but did not immediately leave the battle zone due to the heavy exchange of gunfire and the presence of terrorists, said Senior Supt. Marlon Tayaba, commander of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARRM) police's Public Safety Battalion.

Tayaba said the officers finally found a chance to slip away from the battle zone in Barangay Moncado Kadingilan on Monday night. The police also brought along 5 civilians, who were staying at the house where they hid.

PO1 Lumna Lidasan, one of those rescued, said he and his fellow cops could not bear leaving behind the civilians.

"Pwede naman kaming lumabas, magkunwari kasi mga Muslim kami. Pero naisip ko, 'pag iniwanan, kawawa sila, hindi marunong magsalita ng Maranao iyan. Alam ko papatayin sila," a crying Lidasan told reporters.

"Sabi ko, huwag kayong mag-alala, sama-sama tayo. 'Pag na-rescue tayo, ako ang huling sasakay, maligtas lang kayo."

(We could have escaped and disguised ourselves because we are Muslims. But I thought that we could not leave them because they could not speak the local dialect. I know that they will be killed. I told them, don't worry, we'll stay together. If we get rescued, I will be the last to leave so that you'll be safe.)

The cops and civilians hid in a basement in one of the houses and survived by drinking rain water. They also had a small supply of rice which they ate with salt and sugar.

Lidasan said Maute fighters had fired at their group while they ran 2 kilometers from Moncado Kadingilan to the neighboring village of Banggolo, where they were finally rescued.

A civilian in the group said some of them were grazed by bullets.

Aside from Lidasan, the rescued cops included PO3 Ricky Alawi and PO1s Esmael Adam, Ibrahim Wahab and Bernard Vilariz.

Also with the group were civilians Analices Mari, Jerald Alico, Rodel Alico, Meteo Velasquez Jr. and Jeniver Velasquez.
